interrelation in public space
Our Friesland is a wire drawing based on tandem bicycle tour with citizens of Leeuwarden.
As an international artist I am aware of the nowadays individual way of life, less awareness about global nature changes and how this affects Europe. In this residency during one month I made the project “Let’s draw our Friesland”. About the contact between artists and participants, participants and the region/landscape. The relation between all these elements is art mediation, which is a tool to create engaged participants in a creative art process.
My project in Leeuwarden:
During my residency program from June 3-24, 2018 in Leeuwarden I was involving people to draw on the map of Friesland their own shapes by tandem bike. An important aspect was to do this together in pairs to share and exchange ideas along the way, people could guide me through subjective journey or ride with a friend. The next step was to save their digital routes on a mobile phone to share the drawing thought GPS application, which followed our position. Our bike was the pencil on the map.
In this project participated 13 people from Leeuwarden, who became a group and together created the new shapes of Friesland. It is a kind of delegated performance when I didn’t know exactly what the final results would be and I needed to trust the participants’ imagination. This idea is also a method of drawing by bike on a big scale and create new collages of lines, which is a way to combine our daily life with new quality of the touristic human-powered bicycle. A result of my three week artistic process is a model of shapes which we created and I transformed this to a small sculpture. In the sculpture you can find three colors: blue, red, white, which are the Frisian representative colors. Ten lines in different shapes from thirteen different authors. Members of the creative team in the project are: Anna, Rinske, Maaike, Marijke, Jelly, Geert, Tomas, Gertjan, Michel, Frans, Wytse, Jort & Hein.
I am a visual artist and art mediator based in Amsterdam. I have been selected to participate in a competitive project-based residency in the Leeuwarden, organized by Rotary Clubs Friesland and European Capital of Culture 2018 Leeuwarden. During my residency I made a participative proposal for a sculpture with and for Frisians. I am glad that during 30 days we made a lot and we get to know each other, I wish that some day I will continue the project and build up an amazing participatory work based on tandems.
